The Landmark, a project by a+ design group, is a unique architectural proposal that seeks to transform the St Leonards area of Sydney, Australia. The design group's inspiration stemmed from the desire to create architecture that responds contextually to its urban setting. The goal is to provide opportunities for social gatherings, instigate community interaction, and improve the quality of life for current and future residents and visitors. The design minimizes the impact of overshadowing and view loss on existing residential properties and reduces the footprint of the current structure, allowing for more public domain.
The Landmark is set to become a major new icon for Sydney's Lower North Shore. The project, which began construction in mid-2018, is part of the local Council's strategy for significant urban renewal. The Landmark will link community, commercial, and residential precincts, revitalizing the St Leonards area. The tower's design and orientation provide views in all directions, with the development located on one of the highest points in Sydney, offering some of the best views available anywhere in Australia.
The design group employed innovative construction techniques to realize The Landmark. Prefabricated and modulated elements were created to ensure a simple yet stunning design. This approach not only assisted in reducing the construction program but also improved quality controls and minimized the impact of noise and disturbance on surrounding properties. Sustainability was a key consideration from the start, with shared and integrated vertical and horizontal gardens incorporated on every level to enhance the overall quality of life. The Landmark is designed to be bathed in natural light and air.
The Landmark will feature new activated retail shopping at ground level, four floors of modern commercial office space, and approximately 480 sophisticated residential apartments. Additional amenities include a pool, gym, and easy access to the Sydney CBD. The design also includes a newly activated laneway connecting St Leonards station into Friedlander Place and Nicholson Lane.
The project posed several design challenges, including the need to create a design that would contribute to the character and identity of the St Leonards area, which is often seen as a pathway or commercial district rather than a destination. The Landmark needed to be iconic but compatible with the variable nature of the surrounding streets and ongoing urban renewal. The design group's solution was to create a structure that signifies the surrounding native landscape and geology by its seamless integration with lush green spaces. The design is inspired by the tranquil water surfaces of Sydney harbour reflecting the ever-changing dynamics and colour of city and sky.
The Landmark's design has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics. The Landmark, with its innovative design and commitment to enhancing community life, is a worthy recipient of this accolade.
